Processing of physical oceanography data of FS ‘Heincke’

The research vessel HEINCKE of the Alfred Wegener Institute is regularly sailing the North Sea and the North Atlantic. Temperature and salinity of the surface seawater is measured continuously during these voyages. FIELAX has been processing these data since 2015. So far, more than 220 voyages (incl. reprocessing of voyages since 2009) could be made available via the data repository Pangaea (https://www.pangaea.de/?q=heincke+tsg+). During Read more

First Harvest

In December 2019, a colorful mix of fruit trees was planted on the unpaved part of our yard. In the long term, this initiative aims to provide food, shelter and shade for employees, insects and birds.Only two years later the first harvest can already be looked forward to.

Heat conductivity and temperature diffusivity

For many years, the thermal conductivities of sediments have been calculated at FIELAX from the data of special temperature measurements. For many applications, however, the thermal diffusivity is also of interest. Together with the University of Bremen it was investigated how the calculation of thermal diffusivity from temperature data in addition to thermal conductivity can be achieved or improved. As a result of this project, which was supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), a scientific publication was produced, which is available at https://doi.org/10.1007/s13137-021-00183-1.
